The 11th Chamber Golf Day took place at Rye Hill Golf Course on Thursday 7thNovember with teams playing a game of Texas Scramble over 18 holes with a Shotgun start. The teams, Wellers Wonders, Castle Quay, Berry Morris, BRI Hackers, Jamie Briggs Storage & Removals, Spratt Endicott, VSG, Bower & Bailey & Brethertons teed off after a loud firework was set off indicating the start of the day.
The weather was a gloriously sunny winter’s day in comparison to the previous year which saw downpours all day. The teams were competing for the prestigious Wellers Cup. Previous winners have been Jones Boughton, Wellers, Castle Quay, Berry Morris and last year’s winners VSG. Additional prizes were also on offer for nearest the pin and longest drive.
Hole 12 was once again the Charity hole where golfers had to hit the ball onto the Green. Michelle Lewis did a sterling job of policing the hole and managing to persuade all golfers to hand over their donation! At £5.00 a shot, £180.00 was raised to be shared equally between the three Chamber member charities, Age Concern UK, BYHP and Dogs for the Disabled.
Rye Hill Golf Club once again provided the returning golfers with a fantastic 2 course hot meal prior to the winners being announced.
Simon Smith from Wellers took to the floor to announce the winners. Nearest the pin was won by Robbie Greenbank from VSG and the longest drive was won by Rob Jackson of Berry Morris both receiving a Ping Divot tool.
Only the top 2 teams received prizes and after going through all the teams Simon finally came to the last 2. In second place receiving an FJ Golf glove and titleist golf balls with 61.2 points were Castle Quay Shopping centre, winners in 2009. Last year’s winners VSG retained the title, the first team in the Golf Day history to do so, winning Cypress Point polo shirts each and taking the Wellers Cup with an impressive 60 points.
Preparations are now underway for next year. Either individually in a made up team or as a team of 4, the 12thAnnual Golf day will take place on Thursday 6th November 2014 after the Banbury Business Breakfast.
